CSAS Archives and Historical Information

The official records, publications, historical documents, and correspondence of the Central States Anthropological Society (CSAS) are preserved in the National Anthropological Archives.  The Guide to the Collections at the National Anthropological Archives provides a description of the Central States Anthropological Society Records on deposit.  Records can be searched by keyword using  SIRIS | Smithsonian Institution Research Information System. Select the “Archives, Manuscripts, & Photographic Collections” catalog to begin your search.

The archives and series of historical materials were originally organized by Barry L. Isaac (Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, University of Cincinnati).  CSAS members are forever grateful for his efforts to conceive and establish this documentary record covering the years 1922-1976.  Copies of materials assembled by Prof. Isaac have been retained by the CSAS archivist.  Readers will enjoy his synopsis of the society’s early history through the 1950s:

Deposit of CSAS official records in the National Anthropological Archives continues on a regular basis.  A newly revised finding aid helps interested researchers discover records and historical resources for further study:

Donations of CSAS-related records are always welcome.  For further information about CSAS archival initiatives, please contact:
